Welcome to Grant's Inn.

Jesse Root Grant married Hanna Simpson in 1821. During their marriage they conceived 11 children.  Hiram Ulysses Grant was born on April 27, 1822 in a one-story, three room cottage in Point Pleasant, Ohio, near the mouth of Big Indian Creek on the Ohio River.
In 1839, Jesse Grant secured for his son an appointment to the U. S. Military Academy. When he arrived at West Point he was enrolled as Ulysses Simpson Grant, through an error of the congressman who had nominated him. Finding it impossible to change this official listing, Grant accepted the inevitable and dropped Hiram from his name.
Ulysses S. Grant married Julia Boggs Dent on August 22, 1848. They were married for nearly 37 years and had 4 children.  In 1861, Lincoln appointed Grant as a Brigadier General in the Army.  Ironton, Missouri was his command locations when he was inform of his promotion.
His quiet honesty and unending trust was felt by everyone he met. Though he was only in Ironton for a brief time, the legacy he left us brings pride to our establishment. It is our mission to convey to you the warmth that endeared him in our country. In his spirit of loyal service, we will serve our best.  With respect, we gratefully use his name to welcome you to Grant's Inn.

Grant was elected President in 1868 and again in 1872. Some criticized that his trusting demeanor and political inexperience hampered his effectiveness in passing many of his sound policies. But he was one of the most respected and popular President in U.S. History.

Grant was quoted as saying:
"The Arcadia Valley is one of the most delightful places I have ever been, with beautiful scenery all about, plenty of cool water available, making ice cease to be a luxury, and enough altitude to insure cool weather."
